The Lower East Side Conservancy Details

The Lower East Side Conservancy is a nonprofit organization created in 1998 with the sponsorship of the United Jewish Council of the East Side, Inc. Their mission is the preservation and promotion of Jewish culture on New York's Lower East Side, from the nostalgic "old" neighborhood of a century ago to the vibrant and growing Jewish community of today.

To fulfill the mission they work to preserve, support and enhance the Lower East Side's body of historic buildings, especially its living synagogues that are architecturally, culturally and religiously significant. They seek to raise public awareness of the Lower East Side's historic and present day Jewish cultural identity by showcasing its broad range of historic, architectural, cultural, educational and shopping resources very much in active use today.

Their walking tours, bus tours and special events feature visits to historic synagogues, kosher food stores and Judaica stores.
